Hazards
Routes of Entry: Inhalation:YES Skin:YES Ingestion:YES
Reports of Carcinogenicity:NTP:YES IARC:YES OSHA:YES
Health Hazards Acute and Chronic:INHALATION: BREATHING OF SULFURIC ACID
VAPORS OR MISTS MAY CAUSE SEVERE RESPIRATORY IRRITATION. INGESTION:
MAY CAUSE SEVERE IRRITATION OF THE MOUTH, THROAT, ESOPHAGUS AND
STOMACH. SKIN: SEVERE IRRITAT ION, BURNS AND ULCERATIONS. EYES:
SEVERE IRRITATION, BURNS, CORNEA DAMAGE, BLINDNESS.
Explanation of Carcinogenicity:THE SULFURIC ACID ELECTROLYTE MAY
CONTAIN SOME DISOLVED ARSENIC.
Effects of Overexposure:INHALATION: SEVERE RESPIRATORY IRRITATION.
INGESTION: ABDOMINAL APIN, NAUSEA, VOMITING, DIARRHEA AND SEVERE
CRAMPING. SKIN: BURNS AND ULCERATION. EYE: BURNS, CORNEAL DAMAGE.
SYMPTOMS OF TOXICITY INCLU DE HEADACHE, FATIGUE, ABDOMINAL PAIN,
LOSS OF APETITE, MUSCULAR ACHES AND WEAKNESS, SLEEP DISTURBANCES.
Medical Cond Aggravated by Exposure:PULMONARY CONDITIONS AND SKIN
DISEASES SUCH AS ECZEMA AND CONTACT DERMTITIS. DISOLVED LEAD CAN
AGGRAVATE SOME FORMS OF KIDNEY, LIVER AND NEUROLOGIC DISEASES.
First Aid
First Aid:INHALATION: REMOVE FROM EXPOSURE, GARGLE, WASH NOSE AND LIPS,
CONSULT PHYSICIAN. INGESTION: GIVE LARGE QUANTITIES OF WATER. DO
NOT INDUCE VOMITING. CONTACT PHYSICIAN. SKIN: FLUSH WITH LARGE
AMOUNTS OF WATER FOR AT LEAST 15 MIN. REMOVE CONTAMINATED CLOTHING
COMPLETELY, INCLUDING SHOES. EYES: FLUSH IMMEDIATELY WITH WATER FOR
AT LEAST 15 MIN. CONSULT PHYSICIAN.
Fire Fighting
Flash Point:NON-FLAMMABLE
Extinguishing Media:CARBON DIOXIDE; FOAM; DRY CHEMICAL; HALOGEN.
Fire Fighting Procedures:IF BATTERIES ARE CHARGING, SHUT OFF POWER. USE
POSITIVE PRESSURE, SCBA. WEAR ACID RESISTANT CLOTHING.
Unusual Fire/Explosion Hazard:WATER APPLIED TO ELECROLYTE GENERATES
HEAT AND CAUSES IT TO SPATTER. HIGHLY FLAMMABLE HYDROGEN GAS IS
GENERATED DURING CHARGING AND OPERATION.
Accidental Release
Spill Release Procedures:STOP FLOW OF MATEIAL, CONTAIN/ABSORB SMALL
SPILLS WITH DRY SAND, EARTH, VERMICULITE. DO NOT USE COMBUSTIBLE
MATERIALS. IF POSSIBLE, CARDFULLY NEUTRALIZE WITH SODA ASH, SODIUM
BICARGBONATE, LIME, ETC. WEAR ACID-RESISTANT CLOTHING.
Neutralizing Agent:SODA ASH OF SODIUM BICARBONATE.
Handling
Handling and Storage Precautions:STORE IN COOOL, DRY, WELL-VENTILATED
AREAS WITH IMPERVIOUS SURFACES SURFACES AND ADEQUATE CONTAINMENT IN
THE EVENT OF SPILLS.
Other Precautions:THE BATTERY ITSELF CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING, WHICH MAY
BE DISOLVE IN THE ELECTROLYTE: LEAD, ANTIMONY, ARSENIC, CALCIUM,
AND TIN. GELL CELL BATTERIES MAY ALSO CONTAIN SILICON DIOXIDE.
Exposure Controls
Respiratory Protection:NONE REQUIRED UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. WHEN
CONCENTRATIONS OF SULFURIC ACID MIST ARE KNOWN TO EXCEED PEL, USE
NIOSH OR MSHA-APPROVED RESPIRATORY PROTECTION.
Ventilation:IF MECHANICAL VENTILATION IS USED, COMPONENTS MUST BE ACID-
0RESISTANT.
Protective Gloves:RUBBER OR PLASTIC ACID-RESISTANT.
Eye Protection:CHEMICAL GOGGLES OR FACE SHIELD.
Other Protective Equipment:ACID-RESISTANT APRON. UNDER SEVERE EXPOSURE
OR EMERGENCY CONDITIONS, WEAR ACID-RESISTANT CLOTHING AND BOOTS.
Work Hygienic Practices:NONE SPECIFIED BY MANUFACTURER.
Supplemental Safety and Health
HANDLE BATTERIES CAUTIOUSLY TO AVOID SPILLS, MAKE CERTAIN VENT CAPS ARE
ON SECURELY. AVOID CONTACT WITH INTERNAL COMPONENTS.
